File type: 3GP Multimedia Files
The video and audio container format developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is represented by the 3GP file extension.
This format is specifically designed to handle the transmission of multimedia contents using a third generation cellular phone and an existing Internet network connection structure. This is an inherent file feature for mobile phones that support video capturing capability.
This third generation format is also widely supported by both 2G and 4G cellular phone units. This format file is basically a simplification of the MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) container unit intended to lower the bandwidth and storage requisites to allow the accommodating of multimedia content in cellular phones.
Category: Multimedia Files
Files format: Open-Source
Open with Windows: Apple QuickTime Player, Roxio Easy Media Creator, RealNetworks RealPlayer, VideoLAN VLC media player, MPlayer, MIKSOFT Mobile 3GP Converter
Open with Linux: VideoLAN VLC media player, MPlayer
The 3GP extension saves video streams using MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), H.263, or MPEG-4 Part 2 specifications. The audio component of the file can be in the format HE-AAC, AAC-LC, AMR-WB+, AMR-WB, or AMR-NB.
A file using the 3GP suffix is always in big-endian which means that the most significant data bytes are transferred and stored first. It also primarily describes the bitrate along with the sizes of the image.
This format is related to GSM based mobile phones. The file created under this format using a mobile communication device can be transferred to a computer system where it can be played back and even edited using various multimedia applications.
