MDF files are also the primary database format files that are used by the Microsoft product namely, Microsoft SQL Server. It is a high performance database manage system used by large enterprises for large volumes of data which is installed with the Microsoft SQL server as well as its related add-ons. In Microsoft SQL Server the users may also create custom MDF files.

File type: Keyhole Markup Language File

About the KML file type:

This is a XML-based specification for expressing geographical data, annotations and visualizations for 2D maps and 3D Earth browsers or geobrowsers. It is usually a set of KML files which contain the actual data for geographic locations in terms of a longitude and a latitude value along with other graphic images or overlay information files which are zipped together and distributed as KMZ files with the .kmz extension.
KML was originally created by a company named Keyhole, Inc which was then acquired by Google in 2004 for use with Keyhole Earth Viewer, later renamed by Google to Google Earth. KML files specify various features such as place marks, polygons, images, textual descriptions, 3D models, etc, for Google Earth, Mobile, Maps, or any other geobrowser which uses this standard. Each location is described in terms. KML has been adopted as an official OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) standard as of April, 2008 recommended to be used with all geobrowsers.

File type: iTunes Cover Data Flow

These files contain the artwork for albums as well as the metadata of the songs that have artwork for their covers. These files are used and read by the iTunes software which is an Apple product, to speed up the browsing of the songs in the iTunes software in its Cover flow mode where it shows the thumbnails of the covers of the albums.

These files are saved by default by the iTunes application under the ~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Local/ directory. These files are created, read, edited or modified by the iTunes software directly.

These are not meant to be opened and edited manually since it could corrupt the data in them and create problems.

The album artworks for the songs can be downloaded separately with your iTunes library by clicking on the 'Get Album Artwork' option from the Advanced menu within the iTunes application.

These files contain 2D/3D vector graphics data and are based on Initial Graphics Exchange Specificate or IGES.

This format is used by several CAD programs. These files are standard text files and are used for saving the vector data of graphics and also for exporting them.

These files can be used to store wire frame models, solid object representations or surfaces, circuit diagrams as well as other such complex objects.

In the year 1979 the IGES format was first introduced and has since then become a common standard which is used commonly for transferring, storing and exporting three-dimensional models data between CAD applications.

File type: Icon

ICO files are special image files that are used for icons in the windows operating system for various applications, shortcuts, folders and files.

These files have two bitmaps within them - AND bitmap which indicates the image mask and determines which part of the icon should be transparent; and XOR bitmap which contains the image of the icon, which is then mapped over the image's mask. These files can be modified in most graphical editing software applications such as Adobe Photoshop to create new custom icons which can be associated to different files or folders.

On web servers ICO files do not have much use except one very specific uses for a single icon file namely favicon.ico. This file is yet another icon file similar to the one described above but bears special meaning for the web server. It is generally placed in the root directory of the web server or the web application and needs to be mapped in the files of the web application by mapping a link to it in the header of the html files.

On doing so this icon will then appear on the user's browsers as an image representing the web site. Modern browsers such as the Internet Explorer 6.0 and above and Firefox show the icons of the web sites along with the title of the web sites.

The files using the GPD file extension are typically accessed and utilized in Generic Printer Description files for Unidry minidrivers.

The files saved in the GPD file extension are programmed for the production of Unidry minidrivers. It defines the characteristics of the printer driver and consists of text-based GPD (Generic Printer Description).

The GPD files provide information to the Windows Printing Service on matters relating to the printing devices. When the unidriver-based print driver is run, the GPD file is usually integrated to the .bud file extension or a binary file that the spooler subsystem makes use of.

It may also have references to a PGD file.

On Windows 2000 and later versions, three classes of printer devices are usually installed. One of these classes of printer devices is the Unidriver-based printer driver which was introduced by Microsoft Corp. to allow a simpler and easier way of producing and modifying safe printer drivers.
The driver uses the GPD file extension that identifies and explains all the capabilities of the printer. The GPD file extension is also used by the VISUAL EPR as an Input Data for PARAMS.EXE, CRISP (Geotechnical Modelling Software) or "Front Squasher" (CRISPSQ) as an output file, Gameplay data file and Grid as a Parameter Definition file.
The CRISP "Front Squasher" output file gets a GPR file and subsequently creates the GPD file.

File type: Family Tree

The FBC file extension is used with the FamilyTree Compressed Backup files. The files with the FBC file extension contain data on a family tree used by the genealogy application Family Tree Maker.
It is appended to all backup files of the Family Tree Maker. The said application allows users to create and share their family tree. The FTM or Family Tree Maker has been promoted as the top-selling and most patronized family tree software in the market.
Like other genealogy software application, FTM allows researchers to record all pieces of information gathered during the course of the research and to generate reports, books and charts that contain the said information.
Presently, the software is being offered to the users of computers running on the Operating Systems Microsoft Windows 98, ME, Vista, XP and 2000 only.
The manufacturer of the software has not yet made any announcements as to whether it is going to release it on other platforms. Majority of the features of the Family Tree Maker 2006, 2005 and 16 are capable of functioning with the Windows Vista. File type: eMusic File Format, Pro/Engineer

The EMP file extension is associated with the music files that have been downloaded from the download site eMusic.com. The said files with the EMP file extension are then converted into the MP3 format by the download manager of eMusic. This online music store is known to operate by subscription and has currently more than 400,000 subscribers.

It is different from other known subscription music services such as Rhapsody and Napster in such a way that the downloadable music files are in the MP3 format which makes them completely compatible with every digital music player. The files are also free from the restrictions of the digital rights management software.

The restrictions include burning or copying limitations or expiration dates. Although the online music store has been lauded by the public, its low-price model and lack of DRM or digital rights management encoding have made big record labels frown upon its services making it specialize in non-mainstream music genres and underground artists.

Among its non-mainstream music are pop, jazz, new age, traditional music, underground rap, indie rock, hardcore punk, classical music, experimental music, and electronic which are all on independent record labels.
