Files type: Gzipped Tar
These are compressed archive files which are produced as a result of compressing the UNIX .TAR files by using the Gnu Zip (.GZIP) compression algorithm.
The TAR archive file archives multiple files into a single one and the Gzip compression algorithm compresses the contents of the file and reduces the overall size of the file. In order to decompress these files from a UNIX terminal command line you can do the following:
First type ‘gunzip filename.tar.gz’ and then press enter; this command would decompress the archive files and get the .TAR file.
Then type ‘tar -xf packed_files.tar’ and press enter; this command will decode the TAR archive file and will list all the files that were in the archive.
Here are some programs you can use to view this format.
