What is a .WMV Files

WMV stands for Windows Media Video and it is a video file format that has been developed by Microsoft Corporation and is a proprietary video format.

The WMV format has been based on Microsoft’s Advanced Systems Format or ASF format container and it compresses videos with the help of Windows Media Compression. Essentially .ASF files are the encoding that the video files use in the Windows Media Video format files.

The WMV video compression is a very crude compression technique being a completely proprietary compression algorithm. It is not easily convertible to other video formats.

However it is possible to do so and there are softwares available that do that.
